Ship-To-Ship Transfer of LNG
Ship-to-ship (STS) is a vital operation that allows for a continuous supply of LNG to the terminal. In response to the demand for a more agile LNG importation solution, to enhance the capabilities of our FSRUs, and to increase the flexibility of cargo delivery operations, we developed and implemented the first commercial STS LNG transfer system with guidelines and procedures to mitigate risks.
STS LNG transfers can be performed in the open ocean environment, in a protected body of water at a location, such as a bay or sound, between the LNG load port activity and the market delivery point. A conventional LNG carrier moors alongside the FSRU, in full compliance with our safety procedures, and transfers its cargo to the FSRU via flexible cryogenic hoses. This allows us to utilize our FSRUs as distinct regasification terminals. At the same time, the conventional LNG carrier principally serves as long-haul transport vessels for the delivery of cargoes from the LNG load port to the STS location.
The system is thoroughly tested, certified, and meets or exceeds international standards for the safe and efficient transfer of LNG. The process has been certifiably demonstrated and proven in a wide range of environmental conditions at multiple locations worldwide and is widely accepted in the LNG industry as a best practice standard.
