FSRU: Floating Regasification

We changed the way energy is imported when we established FSRUs as a commercially viable solution to access LNG across the globe. Today, we not only own and operate one of the largest FSRUs fleets in the industry, but we also have the proven experience to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas to meet any demand.

As the global leader of FSRUs and downstream LNG infrastructure, our projects are backed by unrivaled industry experience in developing and operating complex LNG solutions.

Our floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) act, in all aspects, similar to a land-based terminal. In addition to transporting LNG, our purpose-built FSRUs have the onboard capability to vaporize LNG and deliver natural gas through specially designed offshore and near-shore receiving facilities. Our FSRUs can deliver regasified LNG at pipeline pressure with flow rates ranging from 690 MMscf/d to more than 1,200 MMscf/d continuously, providing quick and convenient access to incremental gas supplies.

FSRU Benefits

An integrated and flexible LNG import solution tailored to fit almost any environment.

Cost Effective

In most cases, a floating regasification solution is more cost-effective per MMbtu than a traditional land-based solution.

LNG time efficient icon

Time Efficient

A floating solution can be implemented in one to three years versus a land-based terminal, which typically takes four to six years to develop.

LNG minimal footprint icon

Minimal Footprint

A dockside or offshore regasification facility requires less land use than a land-based terminal, further minimizing environmental impacts to the surrounding environment.

Cleaner Solution

FSRUs allow countries to transition away from coal and liquid fuels, bridging the gap of access to cleaner energy.

FSRU 101

FSRUs have the onboard capability to vaporize LNG and deliver natural gas via specially designed receiving facilities. Our FSRUs are flexible, allowing for conventional LNG loading with discharge: as a liquid at a conventional receiving terminal, as gas through a high-pressure gas manifold, or as gas through a subsea buoy system.

Our FSRUs are permanently moored to a docking facility at a location close to a market access point. Depending on the geographic location and environmental conditions, the mooring infrastructure is tailored to fit specific environmental requirements. Geography and ocean conditions largely dictate which solution is the right choice for the project, but we are able to operate in even the most challenging conditions.

We have a range of fully engineered mooring solutions that can be readily tailored to specific opportunities, reducing the time required for front-end engineering design. Our FSRUs are engineered to connect to an existing natural gas distribution network and discharge high-pressure natural gas to shore via pipeline. For dockside application, natural gas is discharged via high-pressure gas offloading arm mounted to a jetty infrastructure. For offshore application, natural gas is discharged through a subsea buoy linked to a subsea pipeline.

The Next Generation of FSRUs: Excelerate Hull 3407

The FSRU Excelerate Hull 3407, the newest addition to our fleet, will play an integral role in our continuing efforts to provide flexible LNG solutions to emerging markets across the globe. The vessel is being designed and built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, the world’s largest shipbuilder and a leading builder of FSRUs. Engineering and design are being finalized and construction is due to begin in the second half of 2023, with delivery expected in June 2026, after thorough testing and trials.
